Travel Tips

1. We urge visitors to travel to the Wild Coast during daylight hours, and slowly, as the roads are not fenced and you are likely to meet a Transkei speedtrap in the form of a large animal. There are also potholes which are unavoidable at any kind of speed, as well as small, misleading dirt tracks leading from the feeder roads, so it is all too easy to get lost at night.
2. Be alert for reckless drivers.
3. Bring good walking shoes along with you, something warm for unexpected temperature fluctuations, a costume, towel, hat, sunblock and a good insect repellent.

I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF I CAN DRIVE IN A 2X4 SUV(FORD EVEREST) FROM PORT ST JOHNS TO HLULEKA RESERVE AND BACK.AND WHAT ABOUT FROM HLULEKA TO COFFEE BAY? REGARDS

Hi there, Does anyone know what the recent road conditions between Bloemfontein - Lady Grey - to Coffee Bay - Coffee Bay are? We will be travelling on those routes in September 2021 and I would like to estimate driving times. Thanks, Antoinette

Hi, can anyone advise about the road from Port Edward to Port St Johns to Hole in the Wall. We like dirt roads and wild country without being stupid! We have a Kia Sorento SUV which does well on bad roads not requiring 4x4. Secondly, any safety issues. Thanks.

I haven't done the Port Edward to Port St Johns road in about five years, but it is definitely my preferred route when traveling to Durban from Umtata. From Port St Johns to Coffee Bay is a good route. Unless there have been heavy rains, it's very doable in any small car. But can be slow in sections due to potholes. Safety-wise: Always be alert. But I haven't heard of or encountered any issues.

Thanks, looking forward to this trip in December. Where can I find out about road damage, floods etc?

Hey fellow travellers, I was wondering if anyone has tips on travelling the wild coast by bus and knows if that’s safe? I’ll be travelling with a friend (we’re two girls from Germany) by bus from Cape Town to Mthatha and head more North from there. Is that a safe thing to do or are we being naive? Thanks a lot for any advice! Alicia

What is the condition of the R61, especially from Khuleka to Port St. Johns and on to Bizanza?

Good evening. We will be traveling from Port Edward to East London end of Feb 2023. What are the road conditions? Safety tips?
