Libya - Muammar al Gaddafi (MHDSRIP)

The destruction of Libya in 2011 was not a humanitarian intervention that accidentally lost its way. It was the systematic dismantling of Africa’s wealthiest, most fiercely independent state, executed through a coordinated disinformation campaign to secure UN authorization, followed by the targeted assassination of a head of state who stood in the way of Western financial and military hegemony on the African continent.

Act I: The Crime of Sovereignty (What Libya Actually Was Before 2011)

Before a single NATO bomb fell, Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya had committed an unforgivable offense in the eyes of Washington, Paris, and London: it had achieved complete financial and geopolitical independence, and it was actively buying the rest of Africa out of Western debt bondage.

By 2010, Libya held the highest Human Development Index (HDI) in Africa, a literacy rate near 89%, free universal healthcare, free higher education, heavily subsidized housing and electricity, and the Great Man-Made River - a $25 billion, debt-free engineering marvel pumping fresh water from sub-Saharan aquifers to the coast. Crucially, Libya had zero foreign debt, 143 tons of gold in its central bank reserves, and a sovereign wealth fund - the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA) - holding roughly $65 billion to $150 billion in global assets.

Gaddafi was deploying that capital as a geopolitical weapon to break post-colonial control over Africa:

  • Breaking the Telecom Monopoly: Since 1992, European powers had charged African nations $500 million every year in lease fees just to route phone calls and data within Africa via European satellites. Gaddafi put up $300 million of the $400 million needed to launch RASCOM (Regional African Satellite Communications Organization), Africa’s first continental communications satellite, severing that European revenue stream overnight.
  • The Financial Architecture of Independence: To free Africa from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, institutions that forced African states to privatize resources in exchange for predatory loans, Libya was committing $30 billion to seed three foundational African Union institutions: the African Investment Bank (headquartered in Sirte, Libya), the African Monetary Fund (in Yaoundé, Cameroon, with a $42 billion capital pool), and the African Central Bank (in Abuja, Nigeria).
  • The Gold Dinar and the Threat to Françafrique: As confirmed by the famous April 2, 2011 intelligence memo sent to Hillary Clinton by Sidney Blumenthal, French intelligence knew Gaddafi intended to use his 143 tons of gold and silver reserves to back a pan-African currency. This was designed specifically to replace the CFA franc; the colonial currency mechanism that forced 14 Francophone African nations to keep 50% of their foreign exchange reserves inside the French Treasury in Paris.
  • Blocking the Pentagon: When the US created AFRICOM (US Africa Command) in 2007 to project military power across the continent and counter China, Gaddafi used Libyan financial leverage to unite the African Union against it. Because of Tripoli’s checkbook diplomacy, every single African country (except Liberia) refused to host US troops, humiliating the Pentagon and forcing AFRICOM to operate out of Stuttgart, Germany.

Act II: The Architecture of the Lie (Manufacturing the Humanitarian Pretext)

In February 2011, protests and an armed rebellion broke out in eastern Libya, centered in Benghazi. To legally bypass a Russian or Chinese veto at the United Nations Security Council and launch an air war, France, the UK, and the US needed an immediate, visceral moral panic.

They built a wall-to-wall media disinformation campaign designed to convince the public that an unarmed civilian population was hours away from a Rwanda-style genocide:

  • The "Viagra Rape" Fabrication: US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promoted claims, amplified uncritically by Western news networks, that Gaddafi was issuing shipping containers of Viagra to his troops to use mass rape as a weapon of war. Subsequent investigations by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch on the ground inside rebel-held territory found zero evidence of this claim; human rights investigators explicitly reported that rebel contacts admitted to fabricating and staging propaganda for Western journalists.
  • The "Bombing Unarmed Protesters" Myth: Western networks broadcast claims from anonymous "eyewitnesses" that the Libyan Air Force was strafing peaceful demonstrators in Tripoli with fighter jets and using Black African mercenaries against civilians. When the Russian military monitored Tripoli from space, their satellite data showed no such aerial bombardment had ever taken place. Years later, Amnesty International confirmed that the hysteria over "African mercenaries" was largely rebel war propaganda that triggered racist lynchings of Black migrant workers across Libya.
  • The Manufactured "Benghazi Bloodbath": When Gaddafi delivered his televised February 22 speech vowing to clear armed insurgents out of Benghazi "house by house, alley by alley," while explicitly offering amnesty to anyone who dropped their weapons, Western leaders selectively edited the narrative to claim he had ordered the slaughter of every civilian in a city of 700,000.

In September 2016, the British Parliament’s bipartisan House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee released its official post-mortem investigation into the war. Their verdict completely demolished the 2011 pretext:

  • The committee concluded that the UK and France relied on dubious declarations from exiled Libyan dissidents without verifying them.
  • They noted that Gaddafi’s forces had already retaken towns like Ajdabiya and Zaviyah in early March 2011 without massacring civilians, proving that his military was targeting armed combatants, not the general population.
  • The report stated plainly: "The proposition that Muammar Gaddafi would have ordered the massacre of civilians in Benghazi was not supported by the available evidence."

Act III: Hijacking the UN and Killing Every Peace Deal

On March 17, 2011, using the fabricated threat of an imminent Benghazi slaughter, the US, UK, and France pushed UN Security Council Resolution 1973 through the council. Russia and China abstained because the text strictly limited the mission to a No-Fly Zone and an Arms Embargo to protect civilians, explicitly forbidding foreign occupation or regime change.

The moment the ink was dry, NATO violated every clause of the resolution:

  • Serving as the Rebel Air Force: Instead of enforcing a neutral ceasefire to protect civilians, NATO flew over 26,000 sorties and conducted nearly 10,000 strike missions against Libyan infrastructure and retreating government troops, even bombing the state television station in Tripoli and military compounds in Sirte.
  • Violating their own Arms Embargo: While enforcing a naval blockade against Tripoli, France openly parachuted heavy weapons to militias in the Nafusa Mountains, while Qatar and the UAE, with Washington’s blessing, shipped thousands of tons of weapons and deployed special forces on the ground to lead the rebel advance.
  • Sabotaging the African Union Peace Plan: In April 2011, the African Union formed a High-Level Ad Hoc Committee (led by South African President Jacob Zuma alongside the leaders of Mali, Mauritania, Congo, and Uganda) and flew to Tripoli. Gaddafi accepted the AU peace roadmap, which included an immediate monitored ceasefire and negotiations for a democratic transition. NATO and the Western-backed National Transitional Council rejected it out of hand. NATO repeatedly refused to pause bombing runs to allow AU diplomats safe passage, because a negotiated peace would have left the Libyan state intact and Gaddafi alive.

Act IV: Why Gaddafi Had to Die in the Dirt

Why wasn't Muammar Gaddafi captured and put on trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague? Why did he have to be murdered on October 20, 2011, in Sirte?

Look at the sequence of his death: As Gaddafi’s convoy attempted to break out of besieged Sirte, a US Predator drone fired Hellfire missiles at the vehicles, and a French Air Force Mirage-2000 fighter jet bombed the convoy, blowing apart his escort and forcing the wounded 69-year-old leader into a concrete drainage pipe. NATO tracked the convoy, crippled it from the air, and effectively handed his location over to local militia fighters on the ground, who beat, sodomized, and summarily executed him. Hours later, Hillary Clinton looked at a camera in Kabul, laughed, and said: "We came, we saw, he died."

Gaddafi could never be allowed to stand before a microphone in an international courtroom in The Hague for three ruthless reasons:

  • Silencing the Sarkozy Bribery Receipt: In March 2011, Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam told Euronews that Libya had secretly financed Nicolas Sarkozy’s 2007 French presidential campaign to the tune of €50 million, and demanded "the clown give the money back to the Libyan people." Had Gaddafi survived to testify at the ICC, he would have laid out the wire transfers, meetings, and intelligence deals that bought the French presidency. (History proved Gaddafi was telling the truth: in September 2025, a Paris criminal court convicted Nicolas Sarkozy of criminal conspiracy over the Libyan campaign financing pact and sentenced him to five years in prison).
  • Burying Western Intelligence Complicity: Between 2003 (when Gaddafi voluntarily gave up his WMD program in exchange for normalized relations) and 2010, the CIA and Britain’s MI6 worked hand-in-glove with Libyan intelligence in "extraordinary rendition" programs, flying terror suspects to Tripoli for interrogation. Tony Blair visited Gaddafi’s tent and helped broker massive BP oil deals; Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi kissed Gaddafi’s hand and signed multi-billion-dollar energy pacts; US lawmakers visited Tripoli to praise him. A live trial would have exposed a decade of Western covert collusion and hypocrisy.
  • Permanent Erasure of the Pan-African Project: A living, imprisoned Gaddafi would have remained a rallying symbol for Libyan sovereignty and African anti-imperialism. Killing him in the street and broadcasting his mutilated body to the world was a deliberate psychological message to every leader in the Global South about the price of challenging the Western monetary and military order.

Epilogue: The Spoils of the Wreckage

Once Gaddafi was dead, the "humanitarian" coalition walked away.

  • The African Monetary Fund and Gold Dinar died with him. No African state dared resurrect the sovereign currency initiative. France preserved the CFA franc architecture for another decade, and US AFRICOM expanded its drone bases and special forces footprint across Niger, Chad, Mali, and Somalia.
  • The Great Bank Robbery: Over $100 billion in Libyan sovereign wealth assets and central bank reserves were "frozen" inside Western financial institutions under UN sanctions. Over fifteen years later, tens of billions of dollars of the Libyan people’s wealth remain locked inside European and American custodian banks... generating interest and liquidity for Western financial institutions (and repeatedly entangled in scandals over unauthorized management fees and mysterious interest payouts in Belgium and London) while Libyans endure rolling blackouts and crumbling infrastructure.
  • The Ruin of a Nation: The richest, most stable country in Africa was fractured into rival eastern and western warlord regimes, its oil sector carved up by foreign mercenaries and multinational conglomerates, and its coastal cities turned into open-air slave markets for desperate sub-Saharan migrants.

That is the unvarnished record: a prosperous, debt-free African nation was targeted because its financial independence threatened Western empire, lied about to manufacture a UN mandate, bombed until its peace offerings were ashes, and had its leader executed so the architects of the crime in Paris, London, and Washington would never have to face him in court.
