Training

It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that you cannot sincerely try to help another without helping yourself. -Ralph Waldo Emerson

The training initiative manages a team of volunteers who provide hands-on assistance in the school computer labs and

  • ensures that each pupil and teacher has an individual user and email account,
  • supports access to pupils own data and group shared resources
  • trains users on email
  • provide support on Web2.0 applications

The wide area network infrastructure linking the schools

  • provides access to an offline Wikipedia, Gutenburg Library and other educational software located on a server which has been configured with Meraka Institute's Digital Doorway
  • allow shared Internet Connectivity to lower overall costs
  • streamline maintenance and support with a single server / gateway with content filter, firewall, proxy server, smtp server, spam and virus filter, fetchmail, web, and blogging platform (mysql server)
  • allow server backup to other servers
  • sharing applications and info. (Drupal, and Moodle: Web 2.0 apps)

It is planned to use each class's WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) Eco-Schools project as a blogging and collaborative shared environments between schools and classes to enhance English, keyboard, and web skills while actively sharing their environmental and eco-logical knowledge/projects.

Video conferencing (for online mentoring, remote technical queries, etc.) provided by an Ejabberd server on the network.

Voice/video/IM & IRC server in alignment with the deployment plans of the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) XS servers.
Content will be filtered using Dan's Guardian, which is another deployed app with the XS server. In keeping with OSS philosophy, development experience will be useful for other Xhosa/English school networks.

"School days are the unhappiest in the whole span of human existence. They are full of dull, unintelligible tasks, new and unpleasant ordinances, with brutal violations of common sense and common decency." H L Mencken
